Labor Studies deals with work, the workplace, and workers and their organizations. It advances a body of knowledge
that reflects the concerns of modern labor organizations.
At IU South Bend, you can earn several different Labor Studies degrees: certificate, associate of science, and
bachelor of science. Our program is designed to help students serve more effectively as members and leaders in their
organizations—as well as gain a sense of the past and present contexts of work and unionism. Because union
leaders need to be familiar with economics, communications, and other subjects, the program covers a broad range of
learning.
Special Opportunities
The Division of Labor Studies also offers an extensive noncredit program, the Union Education Program (UEP). UEP
open enrollment courses and conferences are available to workers in communities throughout the state; they are
offered in local union halls, on the various campuses of Indiana University, and on the campuses of other educational
institutions.
Careers in Labor Studies
In the Labor Studies program you will learn skills that you can apply to your day-to-day activities at your
workplace, in your union, and in the community. You can gain a better understanding of where you and the labor
movement fit into the big picture: the economy, the political arena, and society as a whole.
A degree in labor studies gives you more than just union and work-based education. The curriculum includes writing
courses, computer courses, economics, and history. An Associate's or Bachelor of Science degree in Labor Studies
represents a high level of academic accomplishment in critical thinking, reading, and analysis.
