Electronic Media, Public Relations, and Journalism
Communication through mass media is central to our modern way of life and contributes to the increasing
globalization of our culture and economy. At IU South Bend you can earn a bachelor's degree in mass
communications with a concentration in electronic media, public relations, or journalism. The curriculum for
each of these areas provides a broad liberal arts education in addition to professional training in media
skills. This is based on the fact that communicators must have an excellent general education in order to
think and communicate clearly and critically and handle information for the public in an accurate, timely,
and concise way.
Special Opportunities
Students in mass communications are encouraged to participate in internships in electronic media or print
media or in public relations as part of their preparation for a career. Students can also work on The
Preface, IU South Bend's student newspaper.
Careers
Graduates with a degree in mass communications will have numerous career opportunities in newspapers,
magazines, television, radio, education, public relations, and many other specialized areas.
