Music students may choose to augment their degree by studying an outside field. By doing so, they will not only
be well-trained musicians but will also reap the benefits of a liberal arts education (such as critical-thinking
and communication skills).
At IU South Bend, we recommend the following disciplines as outside fields: business, computer science, English,
history, journalism, mathematical sciences, modern languages, psychology, radio/television, or theatre. Others may
be approved also. The student should consult an advisor in the outside field for help in designing an appropriate
sequence.
Special Opportunities
Students should check with advisors in their outside field for a list of special opportunities.
Careers
Depending on the outside field, students will be skilled musicians with a thorough understanding of another
discipline. This can be put to good use in careers such as music therapy, musical theatre, radio/television, music
technology, and much more.
