The study of public affairs prepares students for careers in public service by broadening their understanding of
the economic, political, legal, and social issues they will encounter in the public arena. Public affairs degrees at
IU South Bend are offered through the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA).
Special Opportunities
Students in public affairs are encouraged to participate in internships in public service. The curriculum in
public affairs is designed to allow students to develop a program in the area of public affairs that most interests
them. Students are eligible for election to membership in Pi Alpha Alpha, which is the national honorary society for
students in schools of public affairs and administration. SPEA also offers a variety of opportunities for
international study, including programs in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Paris, Thailand, and Hawaii. Students
can also apply for SPEA's Washington Leadership Program. Each spring and fall semester, 25 junior and senior students
are chosen to study govenrment in action in the nation's capital.
Careers
The academic programs in public affairs combine a strong liberal arts education with a professional orientation
that prepares students for work in the public sector. The undergraduate curriculum also provides background for
advanced academic work in a professional area such as law, economics, city planning, or urban administration.
