The study of public affairs prepares students for careers in public service by broadening their understanding of the economic, political, legal, and social issues they will encounter in the public arena. Public affairs degrees at IU South Bend are offered through the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA).

Special Opportunities

Students in public affairs are encouraged to participate in internships in public service. The curriculum in public affairs is designed to allow students to develop a program in the area of public affairs that most interests them. Students are eligible for election to membership in Pi Alpha Alpha, which is the national honorary society for students in schools of public affairs and administration. SPEA also offers a variety of opportunities for international study, including programs in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Paris, Thailand, and Hawaii. Students can also apply for SPEA's Washington Leadership Program. Each spring and fall semester, 25 junior and senior students are chosen to study govenrment in action in the nation's capital.

Careers

The academic programs in public affairs combine a strong liberal arts education with a professional orientation that prepares students for work in the public sector. The undergraduate curriculum also provides background for advanced academic work in a professional area such as law, economics, city planning, or urban administration.
