Political science is the study of political and governmental institutions and processes. At IU South Bend, the
Department of Political Science offers courses dealing with fundamental issues in the governmental process, social
conditions that create the need for government, structure and procedures of governments, control of governments
and enforcements of responsibility, and relationships among governments. The goals of the department are to
prepare students to assume the duties and obligations of citizenship, to provide special knowledge and skills
useful in public service, and to lay foundations for scholarly study of government and politics.
Special Opportunities
The Political Science Club fosters student participation in politics at the local, state, and
national levels. Members meet to discuss important domestic and international political issues and to host
educational events including speakers, voter education campaigns, and political debates. Students majoring in
political science have the opportunity to work in internships at the local, state, and national level. In recent
years, political science majors have completed internships for local city officials, state legislators in
Indianapolis, and members of Congress, and federal agencies in Washington. Students completing approved internships can
earn from 1 to 3 credit hours in political science.
Careers
A degree in political science gives students a strong liberal arts background that prepares them for a variety
of fields such as law, mass communications, local and state government, labor relations, education, business, and
elective office. It is excellent preparation for law school. Political science offers unlimited opportunities for
not only students who have career aspirations to work in government, but for those who want a better understanding
of government and how it affects every aspect of their lives.
