Secondary teachers impact the social, personal, and intellectual development of students in grades 7-12. Their
influence stems from a love of learning, a talent for awakening students to new modes of thinking, an understanding
of the human development process, and professional skills.
At IU South Bend, you can earn a bachelor's or master's degree in secondary education with a concentration in
one or more of the following content areas: English, French, mathematics, science, social studies, or Spanish.
Graduates will be licensed in one or more content areas for both middle school and high school settings.
Each program is aligned with the developmental standards for both the early adolescence (middle school) and
adolescent/young adult (high school) levels as defined by the Indiana Professional Standards Board.
Special Opportunities
Students gain real-world classroom experience through the student teaching component of the program, which places
them directly in schools working with children.
