Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education
The IUSB School of Education offers several programs in secondary education. Successful secondary education
graduates will be licensed in one or more content areas for both the middle school and high school settings. Each
candidate’s program is aligned with the developmental standards for both the early adolescence (middle school)
and adolescent/young adult (high school) levels as defined by the Indiana Professional Standards Board. Students
may select one or more of the following content areas:
- Mathematics
- English
- Foreign Language (French or Spanish)
- Social Studies (student selects three areas from the following six options: historical perspectives,
government and citizenship, geographical perspectives, economics, psychology, and sociology)
- Science (student selects one or more areas from the following: life science, earth space science, physical
science, physics, or chemistry) as well the choice of adding to any of the above content areas.
- English as a New Language
A license in any of the areas listed above requires the completion of specified general education, professional
education, and content courses for a minimum total of 124 credit hours for the B.S. degree. Students are advised
that there are very few elective courses in the secondary education programs and that early program selection and
advising is important for timely graduation. For specific courses and advising information, students should contact
the Education Student Services Office to speak with an undergraduate advisor. For general program information,
students may also request to speak with the program director.

Elective choices may be made from the education or subject area field.
Courses outside the field of education may be used toward professionalization of a second teaching area.
Typically 12 credit hours (6 graduate credits) must be completed in a minor area. A minimum of 18 credit hours
is required in the majors and minors to be eligible for a professional license. All required education courses
for certification, except student teaching, are taken at the graduate level. If degree candidates have course
deficiencies related to their teaching specialties, additional undergraduate courses may be required. The basic
admission requirements for the master’s degree in secondary education apply.
Secondary Education with Certification
(for students with a non-education Bachelor’s Degree)
Students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree in a field outside of education and who then decide
that they want to enter the field of teaching must complete a number of education courses, as well as remove
other deficiencies in their area of specialization to obtain state certification.
This program allows candidates for teacher certification in secondary education who already have a bachelor’s
degree in a different field to pursue state certification requirements, to meet all of the School of Education’s
professional undergraduate requirements, and to meet the requirements for a master’s degree at the same time.
