Sociology is the study of human behavior in social groups and the factors that influence people's beliefs and
actions. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at IU South Bend is dedicated to fostering a critical
understanding of the social and cultural diversity and dynamics of the human condition through education and
discovery. Students receive a broad liberal arts education with emphasis on analytical and research skills.
Special Opportunities
Students have an opportunity to enroll in the Internship Program in Sociology to integrate their academic
experiences into the practical work setting. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology collaborates with the
Departments of Foreign Languages and Political Science and the Office of International Programs to sponsor a
summer program for students to study language, culture, and society in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The department also
sponsors the Sociology Club for students at IU South Bend.
Careers
Students gain a practical basis for pursuing careers in social agencies, social services, and public
administration, as well as private sector careers in business and other areas. Graduates are well prepared to go
on for advanced study in sociology or anthropology in order to pursue careers in teaching, administration, and
research. Some students go on to law school or graduate study in other areas.
