Women have always used math throughout their daily lives and quilting is a good example of this. Quilting is a part of Canadian history that is full of mathematical principles. Therefore, a unit on quilts provides the adaptability for studying mathematical concepts such as; geometry, measurement, and fractions in realistic and practical ways. This goes to further the students' understanding that math is useful and exists in our lives. This unit provides for creativity, as well, it furnishes a pride in our Canadian heritage and art. Quilts are full of stories which generate wonder and curiosity. This is the kind of unit that can abound with parent and community involvement through field trips, guest speakers, and helping hands.
