Academic Learning Services (ALS) at IU South Bend offers a wide range of free services, including
tutoring, workshops, small study groups, foreign language conversation groups, online and video resources, and faculty with special expertise.
The ALS services are FREE and available on a walk-in basis every day and evenings during academic sessions.
Aids for Students with Learning Differences
Both the writing and
learning centers have special equipment and technologies for students with disabilities or different learning styles. If you need special help, talk with the staff at either center or with a
disabilities advisor in Administration Building 112 for information.
Computer-Based Skills Tutorials
Available on the computers in the Academic Learning and
Writing Centers,
these online programs allow you to work at your own pace to
master a variety of skills.
English Conversation Groups
If your first language is not English, get together with a native speaker and improve your speaking skills in an informal setting.
Contact the ALS for more information.
Academic Learning Services Faculty
Faculty with specialties in developmental and beginning university courses in
English composition, reading, and
math are located together in Administration
Building 116. Call on them for help during their office hours or make an appointment to take advantage of their expertise. Get information at the ALS.
Network for Success
This program helps students make the transition to college
through courses with free tutoring. The
courses included in the program are
Enhanced Math 004, Connection
Courses (English W130 and Math M107), and
English and Research (English W131 and
Library Q110).
Supplemental Instruction
This program offers regularly scheduled, out-of-class, study sessions for many of our challenging courses in subjects including
biology,
mathematics, and anatomy.
Threshold Seminars
The U100 Threshold Seminar is a 3 credit hour course that helps students develop textbook learning strategies and test-taking skills, and introduces important campus academic resources and services to new students.
Tutoring
Free tutoring is available in
English,
math,
business,
psychology, most
world languages, and many of the natural sciences (biology,
chemistry, and
physics).
Videos on Writing
More than fifty videos are available in the
Writing Center on almost every topic you can think of related to writing. If you need extra help on shaping a thesis or doing research—or a multitude of other problems—bring your lunch, watch a video while you eat, and learn new ways to approach your writing tasks.
Workshops
At various times the Writing and Learning Centers present workshops on timely issues and problems you may face in classes. Watch
for e-mail announcements on topics, times, and places. Workshops address topics such as preparing to take the
math placement exam, reading textbooks for maximum learning, cramming for final exams, using APA documentation, organizing a paper, and more.
Writing Center
Get free one-to-one help for all writing needs and assignments for any class. Whether exploring ideas, organizing thoughts, or polishing a draft, a tutor can help you improve your papers and your writing. Help with research, grammar, and mechanics is available online or in person from a tutor; and you can use the computer lab to write and print your papers.
