IU South Bend students wanting to succeed in challenging courses can get help from Supplemental Instruction (SI).
Through weekly study sessions, SI empowers students with learning and study strategies to aid them in conquering
courses such as algebra, astronomy, biology, business, chemistry, English composition,
mathematics, physics, and physiology.
SI is designed for, and led by, students and supplements regular class lectures with small-group study sessions.
The sessions are led by undergraduate students (the SI leaders) who have successfully completed the course,
demonstrated academic competency in the subject area, and completed an intensive training program. The student
leaders will conduct several sessions each week that offer students an opportunity to review content, ask questions,
discuss issues, and learn effective reading and study strategies.
Some key elements of the SI program are:
- SI is offered for several traditionally challenging 100- and 200-level classes each semester.
- It provides an opportunity for students to learn how and what to learn.
- Participation in SI is voluntary, free, and open to all students in the course.
- SI leaders attend all classes and study sessions.
- The days and times for SI sessions are determined by the students in the class, on the first day of class.
There may be up to three sessions per week.
- SI has been proven to be successful in increasing student academic performance and retention. Research shows
that students who attend SI sessions on a regular basis can earn on an average one half to a full letter grade
higher than their peers who do not attend SI.
