Audition Requirements
Strings - Composition - Piano - Voice
Auditions - Strings
B.A.
a. 2, three-octave scales
b. 2 contrasting works (may include etudes)
B.Mus
a. Three-octave scales in all major and minor keys
b. 1 movement of solo Bach
c. First movement of a major concerto including cadenzas where appropriate
d. A contrasting work (may be an etude)
At least one work from b, c or d to be performed from memory
M.Mus and Perfomers Diploma
a. Three-octave scales in all major and minor keys
b. 2 contrasting movements of solo Bach
c. An entire major concerto including cadenzas where appropriate
d. A virtuoso display piece such as:
*Violin- a Paganini Caprice, or a showpiece by Wieniawski or Sarasate
*Viola-Weber Andante & Rondo Ongarese
*Cello-Chopin Polonaise Brillante (Rose)
At least one work from b, c or d to be performed from memory
Auditions - Composition
B.Mus
a. portfolio of two works.
b. Recordings on CD or tapes (cued to the sections desired), if available.
c. Interview with the faculty.
M.Mus and Perfomers Diploma
a. undergraduate paper on theory/composition.
b. portfolio of four to six works for different ensembles, including at least one for orchestra.
c. Recordings on CD or tapes (cued to the sections desired).
d. Interview with the faculty.
Auditions - Piano
Undergraduate BS, BA, BME
a. First movement of a classical sonata or sonatin
b. A Work of student’s choice from 19th or 20th century.
B.Mus
a. One prelude and fugue from J.S. Bach Well-Tempered clavier
b. First movement of a classical Sonata. (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven)
c. A romantic work demonstrating considerable technical accomplishment.
All pieces must be presented from memory
Graduate MM, AD, PD
All graduate applicants should prepare three contrasting major works representing different styles and periods.
