Associate Dean of Academics and Associate Professor of Music Education
Indiana University South Bend, Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts offers B.A. programs in speech and mass communication, B.F.A. in New Media, B.A./B.F.A. programs in theatre and visual arts, and B.S./B.M./B.M.E./M.M./Artist and Performer Diploma programs in music. The
Associate Dean of Academics reports to the Dean of the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts. The position of Associate Dean of Academics is multifaceted. The Associate Dean is responsible for teaching courses (equivalent of two per semester) in the reinstated Bachelor of Music Education degree. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience as an
administrator and the ability to work with different areas of the arts.

The administrative responsibilities of the Associate Dean include:

  • Supervise Student Services staff.
  • Manage all aspects of the academic functioning of the School:
    • curriculum development including new course approvals
    • associate (adjunct) faculty hiring and budget
    • program assessment
    • bulletin information
    • class scheduling
    • degree audit and other functions of the electronic Student Information System
    • new student and new faculty orientations
    • student and faculty grievance processes
    • coordinate student advising.

Music Education responsibilities will include:

  • Manage the reimplementation of the Bachelor of Music Education degree program in the Music Area
  • Teach the equivalent of two Music Education courses each semester
  • Recruit, manage, and supervise adjunct faculty assigned to Music Education instruction
  • Serve as advisor to Music Education students and to Music Education student organizations.
  • Create and maintain partner relationships with area schools and teachers to facilitate external teaching and recruitment.

Required qualifications of the successful candidate in the area of Music Education
include:

  • Earned doctorate in music education or other closely-related field strongly preferred
  •  Record of success in teaching music education
  • Record of research or other scholarship sufficient for immediate awarding of Tenure
  •  Active membership in MENC.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Start Date: July 1, 2010.

Lecturer in New Media: The New Media area of the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts, Indiana University South Bend, seeks candidates for the position of Lecturer in New Media/Graphic Design.  Course load is 4 courses (12 credits) per semester, plus student advising and contributing to the service needs of the department and the university.  Qualified candidates should be well versed in design theory, practice, history, and criticism and have in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following areas: page layout and prepress, Web design, color theory, typography, and multimedia. M.F.A. preferred in graphic design, visual communication design or other relevant discipline. Teaching experience required.  Expertise in work-for-print is a plus. Candidates should exhibit strong qualities of professionalism and collegiality.

Assistant Professor of Dance:  Tenure-track Assistant Professor position. Minimum qualification is an M.F.A., PHD preferred. Applicants should possess experience and willingness to work in a culturally diverse environment, the ability to contribute to a young, innovative, expanding performing arts program in a liberal arts setting, competent in directing a program with three emphases (Ballet/Modern Dance, Musical Theatre Dance, and Ethnic Dance), and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the Department and the University.   A commitment to effective teaching and quality research is essential.  Preference is given to scholars with university or college level teaching experience, demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues, and evidence of scholarly activity.  Applicants must also posses the ability to write curriculum, have knowledge of various forms of dance, dance history and ability to choreograph.  The position has a teaching load of twelve credit hours; nine teaching and three research.  Applications received before November 15, 2009 will be assured consideration. Assistant Professor of Music History:  Required qualifications: PhD, college-level teaching experience.  ABD candidates will be considered only if the degree will be completed by August 15, 2010.  Preferred qualifications: ability to provide instruction to graduate and undergraduate students in instrumental or vocal music; or vocal or instrumental conducting including ensemble leadership and instruction. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in music history and literature, and instructional activity in the secondary area.

Assistant Professor Art Education:  The Raclin School of the Arts is seeking a qualified candidate to aid in the development of an Art Education program. The successful candidate will teach 2 courses (6 credit hours) with one course release time to develop the program.  Required qualifications: Ph.D. or Ed.D in Art Education (ABD candidates will be considered only if the degree will be completed by August 15, 2010); minimum three years of successful teaching of art in K-12; college teaching level experiences; evidence of successful scholarship; must be familiar with NASAD standards.  Studio experience in a secondary area is required. Assistant Professor of Mass Communication: Indiana University South Bend’s Communication Arts area invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to teach mass communication courses. The successful applicant will be able to teach the introductory course in media studies and one or more of the following areas: gender and race in media, media literacy, media effects, and/or cultural studies. The ability to teach courses in public relations or journalism is helpful.

Lecturer in Communication Arts: Indiana University South Bend’s Communication Arts Area invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position to begin in the fall of 2010.
