Frequently Asked Questions
When are auditions?
A day for auditions is usually set at the end of the Spring semester for entrance the following semester, around April or May. However, students may contact the staff or faculty of the music area or the Outreach of the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts any time during the academic year for discussions and possibly auditions.
How should I prepare for auditions?
It is advisable to check with faculty beforehand for specific recommendations as to repertoire. However, generally speaking it is good to have two contrasting works. Piano accompanists are not specifically required. A note to those with butterflies - the audition jury wants you to do well too!
What about applying for admission into composition?
Once again, it is a good idea to contact the composition faculty beforehand. However, some basic guidelines are to have the written score and a recording ready.
Is it possible to apply via recording?
It is best to auditon in person, not only for the faculty's ability to accurately assess the skill of an applicant, but for the applicant to get a chance and interact with the faculty and have a look at the campus environment. However, for applicants whose logistics make this difficult - especially prospective international students - video or audio recordings will be welcome. Contact the faculty beforehand for guidelines.
What is it like to be in the music program?
The program is intended to give a solid overall foundation in all the major aspects of music, including theory, history, ensemble participation, conducting and the skills of writing and presenting academic papers. This foundation functions alongside a focussed study in one's specialization, whether it be performance, composition, musicology or music history - which involve one-to-one sessions with faculty. Some degree programs - like the Artist Diploma - may have a larger focus on performance.
What careers can I expect with a music degree?
An education here at the Raclin of the School of the Arts is intended to give options to the graduate - whether it be pursuing the next rung on the academic ladder or entering the workforce as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral musician, composer or arranger. The Master's degree program includes training in the teaching practice as well as advanced skills in research and presentation of academic work.
A new course being introduced into the music program will specifically address career building, including the aspects of getting into the music recording or publishing industries, and the details of working with agents, managers, and signing contracts.
Are scholarships available? How do I apply?
The Raclin School of the Arts may offer a Music Talent Scholarship, that is based primarily on the quality of the auditon. Consider also the financial aid opportunities of Indiana University South Bend as a whole - some 19 million dollars is provided each year in scholarships, grants, and loans.
During the audition process, indicate on the application form your intent to apply for a scholarship.
