Nursing Third Year Review Written Report
Attach 2004, 2005
annual reports
Describe any changes to the program's educational goals since the last
Third Year Review, and the rationale for those changes.
There have been no changes in the educational goals for our program.
Our outcomes are driven by our system-wide curriculum and standards set
by the CCNE our accrediting body.
Describe any assessment techniques used for measuring the Educational
Goals that have been added or discontinued since the last Third Year Review,
and the rationale for those changes
There have been no changes since our last annual report. Since our last
third year review we have added a course evaluation system based upon
three levels of educational outcomes. The rationale for this addition
is that although we have gathered information from students about their
perception of how our department meets our overall educational goals,
we did not have similar information regarding our performance in the levels
of the curriculum.
Attach any assessment instruments that have been used during the past
three years, and the data collected, (or, summarized data, if that is
more appropriate.)
What analysis has been done with this data? What conclusions has your
department drawn?
What changes have been made to the program as a result? (Curriculum, classes
offered, classes discontinued, scheduling, advising, faculty education
etc. . .)
How did assessment data and analysis support these changes?
An analysis of the data gathered is presented in the annual reports.
Some specific areas of concern have been in the areas of producing a graduate
that is politically aware and culturally competent. The faculty discussed
these areas of concern and decided that we were not being specific enough
in our approach. Although the areas were addressed in individual courses
in an integrated manner, we needed to make the students more aware of
the link between their classroom and clinical work and these outcomes.
Our scores have improved.
What changes does the department plan to make in the coming years to
the program and to assessment techniques, and why?
We believe we are doing a good job in assessing student perception of
our program. We also have good data in the form of the Mosby Assesstest
and results on the NCLEX-RN to support the fact that our students are
prepared to practice nursing. However, these assessments occur at the
end of the program, and do not give us information on how students are
progressing as they move through the program. We are in the process of
having a mid-program assessment of student progress through the use of
an exam. This exam will be authored by the HESI company, and will be based
upon our unique curriculum. The exam will be comprised of well researched
questions that are valid and reliable.
Another area that we are exploring is the use of a standardized exam as
a tool to assist in determining admission to our program. We currently
solely rely on grade point average to determine competitive admission.
We know that some of our students take the majority of their pre-requisite
courses at IVY Technical College and that these students seem to have
higher grades in the sciences than their peers who receive the majority
of the their education at a University setting. We are hoping to be able
to make more informed decisions in regards to admission by giving a standardized
nursing pre-admission exam
How were faculty, students, administration, alumni and other groups
involved in assessment?
How were assessment data and results shared with faculty, students,
administration and alumni?
The faculty and administration in the Nursing Department are actively
involved in the assessment process in terms of planning, analyzing data
and making needed changes to our programs. Students and alumni are routinely
surveyed for input.
We have done a good job at communicating results to faculty and administration.
We need to do a better job at communicating results to our students and
alumni
In one paragraph, please summarize the most important impacts of the
assessment of student learning on the program.
Assessment is an integral part of the educational process in the Department
of Nursing. Our assessment process has validated our ability to produce
a graduate who is prepared to function as a nurse in the health care of
our community. We have identified areas that need improvement, and have
made an effort as an educational community to improve these areas.
Is there any other information that you would like included in this
report?
