Career Assessment Testing

The Career Services Office offers two types of career assessment testing: Strong Interest Inventory (SII) and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

Strong Interest Inventory
The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) helps you make career decisions by identifying your likes and dislikes. It compares your choices, analyzes them, and makes a general summary of possible career choices based upon your responses. This allows you to plan your career direction and determine which path is right for you.

The SII helps you to:

  • Decide which career path to take
  • Help you reach more fulfillment in your job
  • Make a career move
  • Decide which educational programs and training are necessary
  • Work towards a wonderful retirement
  • Incorporate business with pleasure

The SII contains 317 items that determine your level of interest in occupational institutions, professional activities, hobbies, leisure activities and diverse types of people. It comes with a detailed printout of results.

Myers/Briggs Type Indicator
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) helps determine your preference for gathering information and making decisions. The MBTI recognizes these preferences allowing us to interpret and realize how we can effectively work together in the workforce environment.

IUSB students and alumni interested in taking the online assessments, must first contact the Career Services Office at (574) 520-4425 or sbcareer@iusb.edu to schedule an initial appointment. After the initial appointment, a career counselor will administer the assessments and the client must register for an SII and/or MBTI Group through the Career Services Office.

RIASEC and Holland Codes

One way of exploring majors and careers is by looking at occupations according to occupational interest. John Holland conducted research that divided jobs and job seekers into six broad categories: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional. Your Holland Code is a generalization, not likely to be an exact fit. However, it might help you discover where you can find occupational satisfaction. Click on a section below to view the different Holland Types, their characteristics and possible career paths. (You will need Adobe Reader to view the following files. Get Adobe Reader here.)

MBTI Profile Types

The most widely used personality inventory in the world, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) provides an accurate picture of your personality type. The MBTI determines preferences on four dichotomies:

  • Extraversion (E)/Introversion (I)—Describes where people prefer to focus their attention and get their energy from, either the outer world of people and activity or their inner world of ideas and experiences
  • Sensing (S)/Intuition (N)—Describes how people prefer to take in information, either focused on what is real and actual or on patterns and meanings in data
  • Thinking (T)/Feeling (F)—Describes how people prefer to make decisions, either based on logical analysis or guided by concern for their impact on others
  • Judging (J)/Perceiving (P)—Describes how people prefer to deal with the outer world, either in a planned orderly way, or in a flexible spontaneous way

Combinations of these preferences result in 16 distinct personality types. Understanding characteristics unique to each personality type, provides insight on how they influence an individual’s way of communicating and interacting with others.
