The Program in Dental Assisting admits students two (2)
times per year.
- Full-time students are admitted in the fall semester only and
complete the program in two (2) semesters.
- Part-time students are admitted in the fall or spring
semester.
- Part-time students admitted in the fall semester complete the
program in four (4) semesters.
- Part-time students admitted in the spring semester complete
the program in three semesters (3). Students attend classes
part-time in the spring semester, full-time in the second semester
(fall semester) and are part-time again in the thrid semester
(spring semester).
- Part-time students admitted in the spring should delay
admission into the program if they are unable to attend classes
full-time in the fall semester.
- There are a limited number of full-time and part-time
positions available.
To be considered for admission into the Dental Assisting
Program, an applicant must have a complete file which includes:
- acceptance to IU South Bend
- completed Dental Assisting Application
- completed ARC (Academic Resource Center) placement tests
- copy of high school transcript of GED score
- copy of all college transcripts
- documented 8 hours of observation of a dental assistant or
in a dental office. To document the observation, request
the dental assistant to provide the following information in
their office letterhead: your name, date and time of
observation, and their signature.
Deadline for submission of application and supporting
documents is July 1 for fall admission and November 1 for spring
admission. No action will be taken on your
application until your file is completed and all documents are
submitted.
Selection Criteria: Students are selected for admission
based on a balance of high school GPA and college GPA coupled
with ARC scores which together show academic promise:
- a minimum high school GPA of 2.0 or GED of 50
- minimum college GPA of 2.0 or better
- satisfactory scores on ARC placement tests
Categories of Acceptance:
- Full Acceptance: (1) Applicant has met all
program requirements. (2) Is one of the top
part-time or full-time (PT/FT) candidates.
- Alternate Acceptance: PT/FT applicants who have met
all program criteria and policies, but are not in full
acceptance category.
- Non-acceptance: Applicants who did not meet the
minimum academic requirements.
- If the class is full, applicants who have met all program
criteria and policies can enroll as a part-time student or be
put on a waiting list for a full-time position.
Notification Dates:
- Applicants fully qualified: Applicants will be
notified of their admission status for fall semester no later
than August 1. After August 1, notifications will be
sent as soon as their application is complete and is reviewed.

1, notifications will be sent as soon as their application is
complete and is reviewed.
- Applicants not fully qualified: Applicants who are
not fully qualified will be evaluated on a one-to-one basis
after notification deadline. 1) Students meeting either
the GPA or placement test requirements may be permitted to
enroll as a probationary student. 2) Students who do not
meet any of the qualifications must demonstrate preparation
for course work by enrolling in appropriate developmental
courses.
- To hold a place in class, applicants must return the
confirmation form within 10 business days.
Registration
Students who have been accepted for fall admission must register
by August 15. Students who have been accepted for spring
admission must register by December 15. Please contact the Dental Education office at 574-520-4158 for
assistance with registration.
Orientation
- New students are required to attend IU South Bend
orientation.
- New students are required to attend a divisional
orientation.
- All students are required to attend the Dental Assisting
program orientation.
Students must submit the completed medical and dental form
completed by September 30th.
Students admitted in the fall semester must submit a copy of
their current CPR card by September 30th.
Students admitted for the spring semester must submit their
completed medical form, dental form, and CPR card by September 30th.
