Dental Home Page

To be considered for admission into the Dental Hygiene Program, an applicant must:

  • Submit an application with supporting documents by February 1. (Applications received after this date may be considered after other applications have been processed.)
  • Have completed one of the science courses: Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Microbiology.  (Science courses must have been completed within 5 years prior to beginning the program.)
  • Be able to complete all prerequisite courses by July 1.
  • Completion of Dental Hygiene Observations (16 hours with three different dental hygienists in at least two [2] different practice settings):
  1. To document your observation, ask the dental hygienists to provide the following information on their office letterhead: your name, date and time of observation, and their signature.
  2. An appointment for dental hygiene treatment at the IU South bend Dental Clinic during the academic year may be substituted for one dental office observation.

Selection Criteria: Students are selected for admission based on:

  • A balance of overall GPA, prerequisite GPA and science GPA which show promise of academic success.  A minimum of 2.5 is required for each GPA (overall, prerequisite and science).
  • Completion of each prerequisite course with a grade of C or better.
  • Preference will be given to students with a strong science GPA's.

Categories of Acceptance:

  • Acceptance:  (1)  Applicant has met all program requirements.  (2)  Has completed all prerequisite courses or will complete all prerequisite courses by July 1.  (3)  Is one of the top part-time/full-time (PT/FT) candidates.
  • Alternate Acceptance:  PT/FT applicants who have met all program criteria and policies, but is not in category 1.
  • Non-acceptance:  Applicants who cannot complete required course work by July 1 or who do not meet minimum academic requirements.

Notification Dates:

  • Applicants who meet the February 1 application deadline will be notified of their admissions status after spring semester grades are received.  To hold a place in the class, applicants must return confirmation form within 10 days.
  • Alternates will be admitted after June 1 until the class is filled.

Prerequisite Completion Policy
Students who have been accepted into the program and are completing prerequisite course work must provide a transcript of the final course grades.  Indiana University students can submit a copy of their transcript from Insite.  Non Indiana University students must send an official transcript.  It is the student's responsibility to submit all transcripts.

Transcripts
It is the student's responsibility to submit all college transcripts to the Office of Admissions and the Dental Hygiene Program.

Registration
Students must complete all required prerequisite coursed work before they are eligible to enroll in Dental Hygiene classes.  Please contact the Dental Education office at 574-520-4158 for information on registration.
