Introduction
Economics deals with
problems of social and individual choice in situations of
uncertainty. The field of economics has a coherent body of
theory for analyzing current business, economic and societal
problems. It is concerned with production, distribution, and
consumption of goods and services as well as allocation of
resources that produce these goods and services. The study of
economics can provide many benefits including an understanding
of economic reality through the use of the economist's
analytical tools. The study of economics also prepares voters to
consider policy questions confronting governments. Economists
study social, business, and individual decision-making habits,
as well as the goals, incentives, and constraints affecting
those decisions. What they discover—and what they decide—can
quite literally change the world.
Major in
Economics
Economics major provides
students with the basic theoretical understanding and
statistical tools necessary to understand individual and
societal role in economic decision making. Our students will

collect and analyze data, monitor business and economic trends,
and develop forecasts. In order to help our majors develop
these necessary skills, IU South Bend Economics curriculum
combines modern social science and business education with
quantitative approaches.
