Message from the Chancellor
Our nation has acquired a new awareness of peril. Beginning on that fateful September day, the American people have moved through a blizzard of news stories about safety issues, terrorism, and security warnings across the country. Today our hearts and minds turn to the Middle East and our troops in Iraq. Although we are encouraged by recent news about the newfound freedom in Baghdad, no one can predict how long our fine men and women will maintain a presence there. Nor do we know how the war will affect the longterm international agenda. There are concerns in addition to our own personal safety. Students, friends, and family members are serving as military and support personnel. Our international students, staff, and faculty are concerned for their relatives’ and friends’ safety.
As we prepare for the difficult days ahead, I want you to know that safety is a primary concern at Indiana University South Bend. The campus has not received any terrorist threats, nor do we have reason to believe that it will be a target. Our emergency plan has been updated, and the director of campus safety is in regular contact with local authorities regarding preparedness. One key to continuous safety is our campus web site, which has helpful links to local resources in case of an emergency. I assure all campus members that IU South Bend will continue in its mission to see our friends and family through these troubled days safely.
Sincerely,
Una Mae Reck
Chancellor
