Reading, Mathematics and English
Most students are required to take the reading placement exam. However, you are waived from taking this if:

  • You took the SAT exam within the last two years and your score on the critical reading section is 480 or higher.
  • You are a transfer student with 26 or more credit hours.

The mathematics exam is required of all first-time students. Transfer students may be waived from the mathematics exam if they have taken a math course equivalent to an IU South Bend 100-level mathematics course at another college.

The English exam is not required for all students. Click here to determine if you need to take this exam.

World Language Studies
Placement exam results are used to place students in courses appropriate to their skill level. All required exams must be completed prior to attending New Student Orientation and registering for classes. Incoming students who have studied French, German, Japanese, and/or Spanish are encouraged to take the world language studies exam for placement purposes.
