Placement Exams

Exam Results

All exam results are posted to your OneStart account. Reading exam scores are posted in 2-3
business days. Results of the math exam are available immediately following the exam and the
scores are posted to your OneStart account in 2-3 business days. English exam scores are posted
in 7-10 business days.

To access your scores, follow these steps:

1. Create an Indiana University computer account. Go to onestart.iu.edu and click on “Don’t have an account?” You must have your 10-digit university ID number and be officially admitted to the university. Be sure to remember (write down) your username and passphrase. If you have already done this, you may proceed to step 2.
2. Go to onestart.iu.edu and click on “login”, using the username and passphrase you created when activating your account.
3. Click on “Go to Student Center”
4. Click on “My Academics and Grades”
5. Look under Transfer, Test, Other Credit
6. Click on “View Test Scores”


Your scores (also referred to as levels) are displayed as shown below:

PLTSB SBENG 20, 30, or 40

PLTSB is an abbreviation for “South Bend Placement Exams.” The Test Component is the exam
you took. These fields do not display unless you actually take the exam.

If you took the SAT or ACT, those scores also appear. For the SAT, the Critical Reading section
displays as “VE” under the test component, and the Writing section displays as “WR.”

Interpreting Your Exam Results

Reading Exam

Score Course Requirements
84 - 156 Based on your assessment, you should be able to complete college-level course work.
0 - 83 You must enroll in X101 Techniques in Textbook Reading during your first
semester to strengthen your reading skills. This course is graded Satisfactory/Fail
and does not count toward graduation.
  The reading exam may be taken once every 30 days.



Math Exam

Score Math Course in which to enroll
Level 0 You must contact the Department of Mathematical Sciences at (574) 520-4335 as soon as possible to receive special permission to enroll in M004 Introduction to Algebra and to obtain information about free tutoring in this course. Note: a score of 0 appears as a blank when you look up your scores online.
Level 1 If your test score is 0 or 1, you must successfully complete M004 Introduction to Algebra to advance to Level 2. M004 is graded Satisfactory/Fail and does not count toward graduation.
Level 2 You must successfully complete M014 Basic Algebra to advance to Level 3. M014 is graded Satisfactory/Fail and does not count toward graduation.
Level 3

You may enroll in any of the following:

M107 College Algebra
M111 Mathematics in the World
M118 Finite Mathematics
T101 Math for Elementary Teachers I

You must successfully complete M107 with a C- or higher to advance to Level 4.
Level 4 You may enroll in M125 Pre-Calculus or M115 Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry. You can move to Level 5 by successfully completing M125 or M115 with a C- or higher. You can move to Level 6 by successfully completing M115, M125, or M126 with a C- or higher. You may also take any of the courses listed in Level 3.
Level 5 You may enroll in M119 Brief Survey of Calculus or M126 Trigonometric Functions. You can move to Level 6 by successfully completing M126 or M115 with a C- or higher.
Level 6 You may enroll in M215 Calculus I. You have also met the general education
quantitative reasoning requirement.
  The math exam may be taken once every 30 days.



English Exam

Score

Composition course in which to enroll

Level 20
You must successfully complete W031 Pre-Composition to advance to Level 30. This course is graded Satisfactory/Fail and does not count toward graduation.
Level 30
You must complete W130 Principles of Composition with a grade of C or higher to advance to Level 40. If you opted for automatic placement into W130 based on your SAT, no score appears online.
Level 40
If you placed at this level, you may enroll in W131 Elementary Composition I.
  The English exam may be taken once per semester or once in the summer.



Placement Exam Requirements in Other Courses

Anthropology

It is highly recommended that you place at Level 40 on the English placement exam to
enroll in A105 Human Origins and Prehistory or E105 Culture and Society.

Astronomy

You must place at Level 3 on the math placement exam to enroll in N190 The Natural
World*.

Biology

You must place at Level 4 on the math placement exam to enroll in L101 Introduction
to Biological Sciences 1 or L102 Introduction to Biological Sciences 2. There is no
math requirement for L100 Humans and the Biological World or T100 Biology for
Elementary Teachers.

Chemistry

You must place at Level 4 on the math placement exam to enroll in C101 Elementary
Chemistry I. If you have had one year of high school chemistry or C101, you may enroll
in C105 Principles of Chemistry I. There is no math level requirement for N190 The
Natural World*.

Computer Science

You must place at Level 3 on the math placement exam to enroll in C101 Computer
Programming I.

Geology

You must place at Level 3 on the math placement exam to enroll in G111 Physical
Geology or N190 The Natural World*. To enroll in T106 Earth and Space Science
for Elementary Teachers, you must first complete T101 Math for Elementary
Teachers I.

Physics

The following math placement levels are required:
N190 The Natural World* – Level 3
P201 General Physics I – Level 6
P221 Physics I – Level 6 (if concurrently enrolled in Math M215)

Psychology

It is highly recommended that you achieve a score of 90 or above on the reading exam
to enroll in P103 General Psychology, due to the serious commitment of time and effort
required in reading and comprehending the course textbook.

Sociology

It is highly recommended that you place at Level 40 on the English placement exam to
enroll in S161 Principles of Sociology or S163 Social Problems.


*Course N190 is offered in various departments with different requirements. If taking N190 in
astronomy or geology, a math placement level of 3 is required. If taking N190 in chemistry, no
math level is required.


Placement exam results in reading, English, and math are valid for two years. The reading and
math exams may be taken once every 30 days. The English exam may be taken once per
semester until a student enrolls in a writing course. It cannot be used as a placement tool if a
student has failed W031 or W130.
