Summer Financial Aid
Eligibility Requirements
Students must complete the IU South Bend Application for Financial Aid to receive summer financial aid. Students complete the application in the Information Center: Gateway to Excellence or call and request one be mailed. You can also request one by e-mailing our office at finaid@iusb.edu.
You must have a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2008-09 academic year on file prior to Tuesday, June 30, 2009. Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
All students must be admitted into a degree-granting program and enrolled at least half time. In the summer, half time enrollment for undergraduate students is 6 credit hours and 4credit hours for Graduate students.
Financial aid will not be processed until you have enrolled. Loans require a minimum of half time enrollment.
Students must be making satisfactory academic progress to be eligible for aid.
General Information
Guest students are not eligible for financial aid.
Summer aid can be used to pay for any education-related expense incurred during your summer enrollment period; however aid will not be credited to your bursar account until all eligibility requirements are completed.
Students who plan to use financial aid to pay for summer fees should register early for all classes. Students who register later, may find the classes to be full and may experience a significant delay in financial aid processing.
Students who register for Summer Sessions I and II will have their financial aid for BOTH SESSIONS disburse ten days prior to Summer Session I. Students receiving a refund of financial aid must remember to save enough funds to pay for books and supplies for Summer Session II.
Withdrawing from Classes in the Summer
Students who withdraw from all summer courses may be required to repay some of the financial aid received. The amount of repayment is determined by a federal calculation completed by the Office of Financial Aid.
Types of Aid Available for Summer
Student Loans
Students who received Stafford Loans up to their full annual eligibility during the academic-year semesters will not be eligible for Stafford Loans in the summer, but may be eligible for a Federal Perkins Loan.
Grants
Pell Grants are available for summer to eligibile students who did not attend full time in the academic year. Depending on the fund availability students may be eligible for a Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG). The Academic Competitiveness Grant and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant may be available if the student did not attend full time during the academic tear.
Summer Work-Study
Students who were employed under the federal work-study program in the previous academic year and enroll for summer, will be considered for work-study. Full time work study is available to students who plan to enroll in the upcoming academic year but who will not enroll for summer courses. Sixty percent of the full summer work study earnings apply to the following academic year as a resource. Contact us to request full time work study.
Summer Overseas Study
Students considering enrolling in an overseas study programfor the summer should contact the Office of Overseas Study to ensure the program is aid eligible.
Financial aid for overseas study programs follow the same eligibility requirements as outlined above.
Child of Disabled Veteran or Public Safety Officer Supplemental Grant Program
Students who qualify for Child of Disabled Veteran or Public Safety Officer (CVO),
must have a 2009-10 FAFSA (available after January 1, 2009) on file, and file the IU South Bend Application Financial Aid (for summer 2009), the Office of Financial Aid will apply this fee remission to your bursar account.
Summer Consortiums
Students who are applying for summer aid to attend another IU campus must have an approved consortium agreement on file in addition to meeting all other eligibility requirements.
