EDUC-F 203 Introduction to General Studies (1 credit)

EDUC-F 203 is required for all students pursuing a Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) degree at IU South Bend. It must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher either prior to admission or within the first twelve credits after admission to the General Studies Degree Program. F203 is offered in the fall, spring and first summer sessions. The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the requirements of the BGS degree, understand the options available, and identify campus resources. Students will develop an academic and strategic plan for degree completion that meets their personal and university goals.

EDUC-F 401 Senior Capstone Seminar (1 credit)

EDUC-F 401 is required for all students pursuing a Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) degree at IU South Bend. It must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher during the last semester prior to graduation from the General Studies Degree Program. F401 is offered online in the fall, spring and first summer sessions. The goal of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to assess their academic program in terms of university degree requirements and their personal and professional objectives, as well as to develop a plan of life-long learning.

EDUC-F 400 Prior Learning Portfolio (1 credit)

EDUC-F 400 is offered by correspondence through the IU School of Continuing Studies Independent Study Program to assist students in identifying and demonstrating college level learning gained through life experience. The textbook, Earn College Credit for Experimental Learning, consists of a practical, step-by-step guide that covers how to identify and document college-level learning from life experiences, how to construct a complete portfolio, and how to submit the portfolio for possible credit toward a degree in the School of Continuing Studies. Earn College Credit for Experimental Learning is also available through the IU South Bend Bookstore. Up to 30 prior learning portfolio credits may be applied to the B.G.S. and up to 15 toward the A.A.G.S.

SCS-G 199 Learning Through Engagement (1 - 3 credits)

Integrates classroom academic content with real-world experience. Topics may include experiential and service-learning activities, civic engagement projects, academic field trips, and internship opportunities. Course includes faculty-directed reading and writing experiences. May be repeated with a different topic for a total of three credit hours.

SCS 299 (1 - 30 credits)

Prerequisite: Faculty assessment of Portfolio. Lower-level credit hours granted for college-level learning on the basis of a prior learning portfolio. A fee per credit hour is charged for posting the credits to the student's official transcript. (Graded Satisfactory/Fail)

SCS 499 (1 - 30 credits)

Prerequisite: Faculty assessment of Portfolio. Upper-level credit hours granted for college-level learning on the basis of a prior learning portfolio. A fee per credit hour is charged for posting the credits to the student's official transcript. (Graded Satisfactory/Fail)
