DSST Examination Program

For students completing the A.A.G.S. or B.G.S. degrees

General Studies Degree students may take DSST exams in the General Studies Test Center (DW 2220). The cost per exam is $95.00, which includes:

  • $80.00 exam fee, payable to The DSST Program by credit card (VISA, MasterCard or American Express) or money order
  • $15.00 service fee, which will be billed to your IU South Bend student account

DSST exams are offered in the following formats:

  • Online ($80 Exam fee must be paid with credit card online)
  • Paper and Pencil (Exams must be ordered three weeks prior to taking exam)

Fact Sheets outlining the topics covered, a sample test, and a bibliography for each test are available at:

Thanks to the generous donations of students and alumni, we have placed study materials for the following exams on reserve at the IU South Bend Schurz Library. You may find these resources helpful as supplements to your other study materials. Likewise, if you would like to donate materials you have found helpful in preparing for a DSST exam, we would be happy to add them to our collection for other students to use.

  • #483 The Civil War and Reconstruction
  • #562 Fundamentals of Counseling
  • #815 Principles of Public Speaking

Test order forms are available in the General Studies Test Center (DW 2220); allow three weeks for receipt of exam. Orders are placed weekly; orders received by 5:00 pm on Thursday will be processed on Friday. Test sessions can be scheduled by contacting the General Studies office at 520-4260. Payment is due at the time of the exam. Please be aware that receipt of exam scores can take up to six weeks; plan your needs accordingly. It is not necessary to order online exams.

These exams are considered transfer credit. The grade of S (Satisfactory) is recorded on your transcript; failures are not recorded. Examinees must wait six months from the last test date to retake a failed exam. Exams annotated with an asterisk (*) were updated and are being administered under a new scoring system.

No more than 15 credits toward the A.A.G.S. and no more than 30 credits toward the B.G.S. may be awarded for successful completion of external exams such as CLEP and DSST.
