The Cultural Awareness program (CAP) is intended to provide resources to help school teachers and students increase their knowledge and understanding of different cultures and global issues.
International students, visiting scholars and returned Peace Corps Volunteers will be available to visit classrooms, community organizations, and other IUSB regional campuses on a regular basis. Public school students may also visit the Center at IUSB for greater access to the people involved and to our resources.
The CAP will also provide briefings for schools preparing to participate in Model United Nations and similar activities.
The center will also apply for grants to sponsor community forums for the discussion of current issues in U.S. foreign policy. We will take a unique approach of looking at U.S. policy from the perspective of those in other countries that are affected by it.
Towards a Peaceful Conflict Resolution (TPCR) seminars will be organized. The TCPR will provide a forum in which international students and students from the Michiana area can gain cross-cultural perspective on sensitive political issues or insight into dealing with cultural diversity.
To contact the CAP program, call the Center at (574) 520-5517 or e-mail at kokrah@iusb.edu.
Future projects: The center will put together an annual newsletter of CGE in conjunction with the office of international programs, which will contain a CGE page for K-12 teachers. It will serve as a forum for discussion of global issues and provides a summary of international activities in the Michiana region. Teachers will be updated on international opportunities and new curriculum materials.
