INTRODUCTION
Your father's company will transfer him to a division in Quito, Ecuador. Your older
brother will be a freshman in High School and you will be in the eighth grade. Where are
you going to school and what can you find out about education opportunities in Ecuador.
The family will arrive in Ecuador before school starts in the fall. This WebQuest will help
prepare you, to become familiar with the culture, people and geography of Ecuador.
THE TASK
- Explore and research the culture, education and customs of Ecuador.
- Look at the geography, Pacific coastline, the high sierra's volcanos, and the Amazon
jungle. Look for maps and aerial pictures of Quito.
- Use the Internet to explore sites at universities, schools, newspapers, TV and radio
stations on the Web. The U.S. Embassy is a great resource.
- Explore the possibility of meeting other students and becoming pen-pals thru this WebQuest.
- Exchange e-mail messages with someone if possible.
- Prepare a HyperStudio slide presentation using a variety of sources to make this an enthusiastic
and enlightening experience for your fellow students.
- To peak interest, prepare a demonstration of Ecuador's pre-sliced bananas.
(With a clean straight pin, carefully pierce the banana skin every quarter of an inch and move in a
manner to create a slice inside the banana skin. Tell your class mates it is a special pre-sliced
banana from Ecuador. Peel the banana over a bowl and pass the slices to the students. What
a great opening for your presentation.) Find out why Ecuador is the largest banana exporter in
the world.
- Keep a running journal to describe your contacts, questions, comments and a log of web sites
visited.
PROCESS
- Start your WebQuest by visiting the Ecuadorean Embassy's web site in Washington at
- Interview someone who is from, or has lived in Ecuador.
- Research your library and media center and gather resources from encyclopedias, atlas, and
magazines. Look for lists of Ecuador topics in videotape.
