History Department Mission Statement

History is the foundation of a liberal arts education.  The study of history encompasses all recorded expressions of human activity-social, political, intellectual, cultural, and economic-from the earliest times to the present.  History introduces students to their own culture and to world cultures.  History students analyze historical data, search for patterns and relationships, ask questions and discover the meaning of the past and its relationship to our modern world.  Ultimately, history encourages students to gain an understanding of themselves and their world while becoming informed and engaged citizens.

The History Department faculty members are committed to teaching, research, and community outreach.  The Department houses the Civil Rights Heritage Center, which uses local and national history to promote social change through individual responsibility and improved race relations.

History Department Goals

● Students seeking degrees in History will be exposed to a broad understanding of the past and the varieties of ways to examine it.

● Students should be able to understand and analyze primary and secondary sources, including archival documents, journal articles, and monographs.

● Students should be able to use a variety of research tools, both in print and in electronic format.

● Students should be able to communicate, both in written and verbal form, multiple ways of understanding the past.

● Students should develop ways of thinking historically.

● Students should gain a global perspective by taking courses that cover various regions of the world.
