History majors win scholarships to Bloomington conference.
Congratulations to History majors Derek Webb, Susan Jacobs, and Phil Contos! They have been awarded individual scholarships to the Cornelius O’Brien Conference on Historic Preservation, to be held in Bloomington, October 16 to 18, 2008.
The conference is named in honor of Cornelius O’Brien (1883-1953), a successful banker, farmer, and manufacturer. O’Brien led the way in recognizing the need for preserving Indiana’s historic buildings and sites. He was active in the Indiana Historical Society, serving for many years as an officer and a member. Among his major interests was the restoration of a portion of the Whitewater
Canal near Metamora, in Franklin County. As a personal project, he enlarged and preserved historic Veraestau, home of the Holman, Hamilton, and O’Brien families.
The program offers a wide range of sessions, with speakers having national, statewide, and local experience and reputations. The scholarships cover hotel, registration and meals.
