What does the Career Services Office do?
The Career Services Office provides services to current students as well as alumni. The services provided include career counseling and assessments (free for currently enrolled students; fee-based for non-students, alumni, and community members). The
office also assists students with identifying job and internship opportunities and assists job and internship seekers with creating resumes and cover letters. The
office is available to provide mock interviews for job seekers preparing for the work force. We maintain a job/internship database which is accessible to the public. Information on graduate school is also available through the
Career Services Office.
When are office hours?
Normal hours of operation are Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. However, office hours outside of normal working hours are available on an as-needed basis to meet the needs of a diverse student population.
Do I need to make an appointment?
Appointments are strongly encouraged. If a staff member is available, drop-ins are accommodated.
Can the Career Services Office help me with finding a job?
Yes the Career Services Office can help you with the job search process. The
office hosts a job/internship database that lists hundreds of jobs and internship opportunities. Many of the postings are local and regional, to meet the geographic needs of our student population. The staff assists job seekers with all aspects of the job search process including resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills, and with creating effective job search strategies. The
office creates and maintains relationships with local and regional employers to maximize opportunities for graduates.
Does the Career Services Office help with choosing/changing majors?
Students who want assistance with choosing or changing a major are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a career counselor. Career counseling sessions and assessment testing are available to current students at no cost.
Alumni and community members are charged a fee to take the assessments. Note: Services to the community are available only as schedules permit.
What is an internship?
Internships are usually described as a short-term, one-time professional employment opportunity designed to give students experience in career-related fields. Internships vary in length, hours per week, pay, and academic credit options.
Does the Career Services Office sponsor
job fairs?
Each spring semester, the IU South Bend Career Services Office sponsors a
career and internship fair. Currently, IU South Bend is partnering with ten area colleges and universities in sponsoring this annual event.
Can the Career Services Office help me with graduate school?
The Career Services Office provides information on graduate school programs and application processes. Also, the
office provides career counseling to those who wish to pursue graduate school but who have unclear educational and career goals.
