How can I find scholarships?
The deadline for most IU scholarships is April or May, depending on the scholarship.
The “Paying for College” brochure lists most
scholarships and requirements. The scholarship Web site at
http://www.iusb.edu/~scholar1/ has the most up-to-date list.
There is also a list of links on the scholarship site.
After I turn in my financial aid paperwork, how long does it take to get my money?
Wait at least a week and then check your
OneStart account.
When will I receive my excess aid?
“Excess aid” may also be called a refund. The earliest you may receive a refund of excess aid is approximately a week before class. Questions about the amount or deposit of the refund should be directed to the
Office of the Bursar.
When and where can I get a book voucher?
Due to Barnes & Noble becoming our new campus bookstore vendor, the Office of the Bursar no longer issues book vouchers to financial aid students. Financial aid is not processed until all documentation is received. Therefore, students should regularly review their "To Do" list on OneStart
for notification from the financial aid office regarding additional documentation. For fastest receipt of any bursar
refund, sign up for direct deposit through OneStart.
The bursar's office begins ordering fall refunds as soon as aid credits under the "Financial Aid" heading of your
bursar account summary -- on or around
August 20. If you are planning to use your excess financial aid to purchase books and supplies, be sure to set up direct deposit for your refund. On OneStart, look for the "Bursar & Financial Aid" heading, then click on "Sign Up for Direct Deposit". Follow the directions for "Bursar Refunds".
Or click here. Direct deposit refunds normally take 2-3 business days to reach your bank account.
Can international students receive federal financial aid?
Under certain circumstances yes, but usually, no. These students can apply for an Opportunity Loan. To do so, they need to make an appointment with the
director of financial aid or the senior financial aid administrator.
State Financial Aid (SSACI Grants)
I have an award letter from the State of Indiana (State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana [SSACI]), but IU South Bend
isn’t listed as a school. How do I contact
SSACI?
The easiest way to contact them is via the Web at http://www.in.gov/ssaci. Once at the site, click on
the button at the top of the page labeled “Students” and then on “eStudent”.
You may also call SSACI at (317) 232-2350. They prefer to be contacted via
the Web. Our federal school code is 001816.
The IU South Bend award letter I received has an award called
SSACI Difference. What is that?
The state considers enrollment of 15 credit hours per semester to be full-time. Students at IU South Bend typically enroll in
only 12 credit hours and are considered to be full-time, but not for state aid. The SSACI Difference award tells
you how much additional aid you can receive if you enroll in additional hours.
Last year I got part-time SSACI, but not this year. When will
I receive that?
There is no guarantee from one term to the next that you will receive part-time SSACI. We begin reviewing students after the fourth week of the semester.
Applications
How do I get financial aid?
To receive aid, you must be admitted by the
Office of Admissions, or
a graduate program, and be degree seeking. Students who are admitted as nondegree or guest students are not eligible for financial aid.
I am admitted and expecting financial aid. I don’t have
any requirements on the OneStart "To Do List". Where is the aid?
The admissions application is NOT an application for financial aid. See the question “How do
I apply for financial aid?”
How do I apply for financial aid?
You must file both the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the IUSB Application for Financial Aid. The IU South Bend
application is available in our office, but not online. The
FAFSA should be filed electronically by going to
http://www.FAFSA.ed.gov. If you need assistance filing the FAFSA,
come to the information center for help.
What is our federal school code?
001816 (please include the two zeros at the front). You must have this number to complete a
FAFSA on the Web
or to make changes to your
FAFSA.
I have financial aid from IU Bloomington, Ivy Tech, Bethel, or another college and
want to transfer here at the last minute. Can financial aid be transferred with
me?
No. Each school is different and each school has a different type of financial aid. To change
your aid from one school to another, you must contact your old school and tell them
you won’t be attending. Then, speak to a financial aid professional about changing
your financial aid records to get aid from IU South Bend. For information on how to do that,
click here and choose "Financial Aid Transfer Instructions (For transferring both into and out of IU South Bend)" for the appropriate academic year.
Missing Information
Where do I find out what’s missing in my financial aid file?
Always check your financial aid status on your OneStart "To Do List". This will tell
you what items you still have left to do to complete your financial aid for the year.
The OneStart To Do List says I need an IU South Bend application for financial
aid. Where is that?
They are located in the Administration Building lobby. The form is only one page long. We do not accept forms without signatures and your student ID number.
If you have not yet been admitted to IU South Bend, please use your Social
Security number. NO FORM SHOULD EVER BE COMPLETED OR SIGNED IN PENCIL.
You may have trouble with the loan amount, but look at the chart on
the form; it explains how much you can borrow based on your grade level.
At the bottom of the application is a confidentiality statement. If
you would like to allow someone else, such as a parent or guardian, to ask us any questions about
your financial aid, you must sign a release to do so.
You have the right to change this information at any time.
I was told that I need to turn in documents. How can I
find out which ones I need if I don't have my letter/e-mail?
Start with the OneStart "To Do List". You might have been selected for verification and need to turn in any number of forms. The
OneStart "To Do List" may have a list which looks something like the following (this list is only a sample of items that might appear on a
to do list):

- You don’t need to worry much about this column; it’s for office use
only.
- These are the items you need to complete at some point in the application process. The items may already be here. The first one on the list, which is green, is the IU South Bend
application. The orange ones are forms that you
must provide. They must be signed and we need all pages. The blue forms are forms which we have already sent
you. If you lost the forms, we have them in our office. Some can be printed from our
Web site.
- This column tells you the status of the document:
- “Completed” means we have it and have reviewed it as needed and all is well.
- “Received” means we have the form, but haven’t reviewed it yet.
- “Initiated” means we have requested the form, but we haven’t received it.
- “Returned” means we sent it back for some reason.
- “Waived” means we asked for it once, but decided we didn’t need the form or information any longer. This usually happens when we have accidentally assigned a duplicate request.
