Financial Aid and Scholarships

Living and studying in another country—whether for a summer, a semester, or a full year—can enrich your education and help you prepare for a career in today's interconnected world. IU South Bend offers study abroad programs in Mexico, Jamaica, and South Africa, and has direct exchange relationships with international universities in Germany, Mexico, and Ireland. In addition, IU South Bend students can take advantage of the more than 70 programs administered by IU's Office of Overseas Study. See our study abroad brochure  for more information.

Requirements: All study abroad programs require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or special permission.

IU South Bend Overseas Study Programs

  • Mexico: Language, Culture, and Society (Summer II) 3 credits in Sociology and 3 in Spanish

The departments of foreign language, political science, and sociology join with the Office of International Programs to offer IU South Bend students a unique opportunity to spend a summer studying language, culture, and society in Cuernavaca, Mexico. It is a four-week program, offered in conjunction with the Cuernavaca's Universal Center for Language and Social Communication.   • Belize: Tropical Marine Biology (every other May) 3 credits

The Department of Biological Sciences offers a nine-day Spring Break trip for students to gain marine biology field experience in Jamaica. While at the Hofstra University Marine Laboratory (HUML), students attend daily lectures, collect specimens, identify species, and generally explore the physiological and ecological diversity of this tropical marine environment.   • South Africa: Social Action Project (variable times and variable credit)

The Social Action Project (SOCACT), sponsored by the Psychology Department, sends students to Durban, South Africa, every other year to conduct social science research. Teams of students and professionals collaborate to identify problems within the community and bring about beneficial change. For more information, contact SOCACT.

  • The New European Union (every other summer late May to early June) 3 credits

This two week program, organized through the department of Political Science, offers students sessions at NATO Headquarters and the European Parliament in Brussels, at the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights, and the Council of Europe in Luxembourg, home stays with families in Brussels, and a week end in Paris.   • London and Paris: Becoming Modern, 1666-1870 (every other summer) 6 credits

This program, jointly organized by the departments of English and Foreign Languages, builds on a 3-week summer course in English and French literature and culture. This is followed by about 10 days each in London and Paris. For more information, please contact either Professor Joe Chaney (jchaney@iusb.edu), English, or Professor Lesley Walker (lwalker@iusb.edu), French, or the Office of International Programs.

This spring-break program offers 10 days studying culture, society, and environment in Costa Rica, including home stays with families in Nicoya. The partner institution is Instituto Guanacasteco de Idiomas. IU South Bend Overseas Exchange Programs

We offer three unique overseas student exchange programs providing our students with the chance to live and study with host-country students while taking classes at a partner university. Our current partner institutions are:

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Most forms of financial aid can be applied to overseas study programs administered or cosponsored by IU South Bend. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for more information and details.

We also offer several scholarship programs designed to offset the expense of overseas study.

  • Sergio Mendez Arceo Scholarship
    This scholarship is for IU South Bend's Mexico: Language, Culture, and Society program and is awarded to students of Mexican heritage. It pays 50 percent of the program fee.   • IU Office of Overseas Study Scholarships
    Several scholarships are available to IU South Bend students based on academic achievement and financial need. Contact the Office of Overseas Study Scholarship Applications  for more details and criteria. Application deadline depends on overseas study program.
  • Joseph L. and Julia B. Peyser Study Abroad Undergraduate Scholarship
    This scholarship encourages well-qualified students at IU South Bend to enrich their education by residence ,study, or research abroad. Study abroad proposals may be made for a period of or one academic year, one semester, or a summer session. Click here for the printable application or contact the Office of Student Scholarships for more information.   • David Starr Jordan Foreign Studies Scholarship
    This scholarship is intended to encourage undergraduate and graduate students at IU South Bend to enhance their education by residence and study abroad. Applicants may be majors in any academic field. Click here for the printable application. Application deadline is February 1, 2008.
