Requirements: All study abroad programs require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or special permission.

Living and studying in another country—whether for a summer, a semester, or a full year—can enrich your education and help you prepare for a career in today's interconnected world. IU South Bend offers study abroad programs in Mexico, Jamaica, and South Africa, and has direct exchange relationships with international universities in Germany, Mexico, and Ireland. In addition, IU South Bend students can take advantage of the more than 70 programs administered by IU's Office of Overseas Study. See our study abroad brochure  for more information.

IU South Bend Overseas Study Programs

This spring-break program offers 10 days studying culture, society, and environment in Costa Rica, including home stays with families in Nicoya. The partner institution is Instituto Guanacasteco de Idiomas.   • Mexico: Language, Culture, and Society (Summer II) 3 credits in Sociology and 3 in Spanish. download brochure

The departments of foreign language, political science, and sociology join with the Office of International Programs to offer IU South Bend students a unique opportunity to spend a summer studying language, culture, and society in Cuernavaca, Mexico. It is a four-week program, offered in conjunction with the Cuernavaca's Universal Center for Language and Social Communication.   • London and Paris: Becoming Modern, 1666-1870 (every other summer) 6 credits

This program, jointly organized by the departments of English and Foreign Languages, builds on a 3-week summer course in English and French literature and culture. This is followed by about 10 days each in London and Paris. Deadlines: February 13, 2009

In this four-week program, classes will be held four days a week with photo opportuni-ties planned for each day, and will have daily field trip time in Florence, Italy, study-ing photography. Studnets will receieve 6 credits for IUSB courses which conducts in cooperation with the Santa Reparata International School of Art.   • Belize: Tropical Marine Biology (every other May)

The Department of Biological Sciences offers a ten-day trip at the end of the Spring semester for students to gain marine biology field experience in Belize. While at the Marine TREC facility in San Pedro students learn about the tropical marine and terrestrial environment during daily trips to sites such as coral reefs, mangroves, rainforests and Mayan ruins.   • South Africa: Social Action Project (variable times and variable credit)

The Social Action Project (SOCACT), sponsored by the Psychology Department, sends students to Durban, South Africa, every other year to conduct social science research. Teams of students and professionals collaborate to identify problems within the community and bring about beneficial change.   • The New European Union (every other summer late May to early June) 3 credits

This two week program, organized through the department of Political Science, offers students sessions at NATO Headquarters and the European Parliament in Brussels, at the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights, and the Council of Europe in Luxembourg, home stays with families in Brussels, and a week end in Paris.
