TRANSITIONAL IRB PROCEDURES - effective 7/29/04
IU South Bend's Institutional Review Board (IRB) is entering a transitional
period. For the next three months all applications for IRB approval (exempt,
expedited, and full) will be reviewed by the full IUSB IRB in conjunction with
the chair of the Bloomington Human Subjects Committee (Peter Finn).
Normally the full board meets only once a month. However, we are considering
adding additional meetings if there is a need. Please allow sufficient time for
your IRB application to make it through this process before beginning your
research. As always, no research involving human subjects can be started without
IRB approval in place. Contact the IRB office (sbirb@iusb.edu)
for the current review schedule.
Our current schedule is as follows:
Due by noon on 9/3/04 to be reviewed on 9/10/04
Due by noon on 9/17/04 to be reviewed on 9/24/04
Due by noon on 10/1/04 to be reviewed on 10/8/04
Due by noon on 10/15/04 to be reviewed on 10/22/04
We have created a new website to allow better access to IUSB's new IRB forms and
policies (www.iusb.edu/~sbirb).
Please begin using the IUSB forms today. Although, the policies are still being
reviewed, they can serve as a guide as you work your way through the IRB
process. Some of the biggest changes are in the following areas:
1. Students as Subjects (http://www.iusb.edu/~sbirb/studentsassubjects.shtml)
2. Student research (http://www.iusb.edu/~sbirb/studentresearch.shtml)
If you plan to use students as research subjects or if you supervise students
who will be doing research involving human subjects, you should review the above
policies carefully.
We appreciate your patience with this process and we look forward to working
closely with all of you that do human subject research at IUSB.
