GoPrint Coming in Spring

See our Frequently Asked Questions

This year’s campus theme is “sustainability.” Everyone understands the importance of being environmentally sensitive. Here at IU South Bend, one way to help preserve the environment is to manage printing. IU South Bend will soon be providing the technology for students to manage their printing more responsibly. If you’ve ever seen the containers full of discarded paper in the computing labs, you can get a feel for the impact this could have toward “going green.”

During the spring and summer 2008 semesters a pilot phase of the print management system, GoPrint, will be activated in all student computing labs on campus. Students will not be charged for printing! During this time the students will learn how to interact with the system while IT works out any glitches that might arise. With GoPrint, when a document is sent to the printer a pop-up screen will require the student to authenticate. The screen will show how many pages will be printing and allow the student to print or discard the document.

Some campuses are going with “pay for print,” but IU South Bend would like to continue to provide for the academic printing needs for students. However, costs continue to rise. What we all want is to eliminate wastefulness and stay green. GoPrint will give students the opportunity to manage university resources responsibly on a personal level.

In fall 2008, GoPrint will go live. Students will receive an allotment of free printing, paid for by student technology fees, which will cover most, if not all, of their academic printing. The allotment has yet to be determined, but will be based on an analysis of past usage and a comparison with other universities. Once their allotment has been used, students must pay for any additional printing needs by adding money to their account.

The benefits of print management go beyond going green. It is likely that we will be able to add enhancements such as color printing and printing from campus wireless computers in fall 2008 or spring 2009.
