GoPrint Reimbursement Form

frogEveryone understands the importance of being environmentally sensitive. Here at IU South Bend, one way to help preserve the environment is to manage printing. IU South Bend is providing the technology for students to manage their printing more responsibly. If you’ve ever seen the containers full of discarded paper in the computing labs, you can get a feel for the impact this could have toward “going green.”

During the spring and summer 2008 semesters a pilot phase of the print management system, GoPrint, was activated in all student computing labs on campus. Students were not charged for printing. During this time the students learned how to interact with the system while IT worked out any glitches that arose. With GoPrint, when a document is sent to the printer a pop-up screen requires the student to authenticate. The screen shows how many pages will be printing and allows the student to print or discard the document.

Some campuses have gone with “pay for print,” but IU South Bend would like to continue to provide for the academic printing needs for students. However, costs continue to rise. What we all want is to eliminate wastefulness and stay green. GoPrint gives students the opportunity to manage university resources responsibly on a personal level.

This fall 2008, GoPrint is going live. Students receive an allotment of free printing, paid for by student technology fees, which covers most, if not all, of their academic printing.  Each semester’s allotment is the equivalent of 650 pages printed on one side.  Once their allotment has been used, students must pay for any additional printing needs by adding money to their account.

The benefits of print management go beyond going green. It is likely that we will be able to add enhancements such as color printing and printing from campus wireless computers in fall 2008 or spring 2009.
