What does the VPN do?
Wireless access at IUSB – If you have a laptop or Pocket PC with Wireless capability, you need a VPN connection to confirm you are a member of the IUSB community in order receive a valid network connection on your device. If your computer can connect to “IUSB Wireless”, you only need to login through the VPN to get full network access.
Resource access from home – If you want to access network drives from home you can do so by establishing a VPN connection. You do not get any drives mapped by default, but you can access the servers and browse to your “network drives”. You can find out what server(s) your drives are on by opening “My Computer” while logged in at IUSB.
- Your O: drive should appear as “ username on ‘server-name\directory’ ”
- Your H: drive should appear as “ dept on ‘server-name’ ”
After logging in to the internet, and then logging in through the VPN connection, you can open My Computer and in the address path type in \\server-name\ to access that server, for your O: drive browse to the “home” directory (typically) then open the folder with your username. Department drives are usually located on the root directory of their server. Detailed information for accessing network resources can be found on the IT website http://www.iusb.edu/~sbit following the link for phone, internet, and video connections.
