Surveys the origin and development of the labor movement from colonial times to the present. The struggle of working people to achieve a measure of dignity and security is examined.

L110, INTRO TO LSTU: LABOR & SOCIETY - 3 Credit Hours

Class Nbr. 23723, Tues./Thurs. 1-2:15pm , NS 109. Paul Mishler, Assistant Professor, DLS/IUSB. This course will introduce students to the interdisciplinary and advocacy approach of labor studies. Explores the role of labor in society and how unions have changed the lives of working people.

This course examines and analyzes workers and labor markets within the United States. Topics of study: employment practices, unemployment, discrimination, minimum wage, unions, collective bargaining, firms, investment policies, technological change, corporate governance, pensions, job security, the effects of globalization, and other contemporary labor issues.

L290, TOPICS: FIGHTING SEXUAL HARASSMENT - 1 Credit Hour

This course will examine all aspects of workplace and academic sexual harassment. Discussions on EEOC guidelines and regulations; employer and school liability; personnel, school and labor agreement language and policies, arbitrator standards, and personal perspectives. Reasons for and solutions to workplace and academic sexual harassment will be discussed.

L290, TOPICS: FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT (FMLA) - 1 Credit Hour

Class Nbr. 26448. Tues., 6:55-9:25p.m. NS 107. March 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29. Rae Sovereign, Lecturer, DLS/IUSB.

This course will examine the relatively recent law that has given employees new rights. The course will examine history of the passage of the FMLA. Discussions on maternity, parental and sick leave and protections for disabled workers in the US and other countries.

L290/390, TOPICS: LABOR ISSUES THROUGH FILM - 3 Credit Hours

This class will feature the viewing and discussion of labor-oriented films. In each session we will discuss specific labor struggles and working class issues addressed in the film. Discussions on working conditions, race, gender, union goals and labor-management relations.
