The Black Man’s Reading and Empowerment Group will have its initial meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Charles Martin Youth Center, 802 Lincoln Way W., South Bend.
The reading group, which is geared for males over the age of 18, will engage young men in read as a way to understand and grow as individuals. The group is open to anyone but it is designed as a support group to men.
The group will reading from four works of Na'im Akbar, a clinical psychologist at Florida State University. He is a lecturer, author and expert on African-centered psychology. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Akbar has served as a professor of psychology at Morehouse College and at Norfolk State University.
The first book will be “The Community of Self.” A few books will be available for sale. The group will meet quarterly and the next three meetings will be at Indiana University South Bend.
The group is being formed by Making the Academic Connection, a student services office for the retention of students of color at IU South Bend. For further information, call (574) 520-4241.
