The Alpha Phi Alpha Step Show will come to Indiana University South Bend at 7 p.m. Saturday, April, 9, in the Administration Building cafeteria.

Stepping is a form of dance that combines elements of military drills, jazz and hip-hop. The body takes the place of a drum. Participants clap, slap, stomp, sing and chant through the performance. It is often part of the initiation process of many African American sororities and fraternities.

Alpha Phi Alpha chapters from the University of Kentucky, Purdue University and Wilberforce University (Ohio) will be performing. Alpha Phi Alpha is recognized as the first member of the “Divine Nine” – the nine original African American sororities and fraternities in the United States.

Guests must have a ticket to attend the step show. Ticket prices are $5 in advance and $7 at the door for the general public. Advance tickets for IU South Bend students (with student ID) are free or $2 at the door. The party following the step show is non-alcoholic.

Tickets are on sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Friday in Room 201, of the Student Activities Center, or from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, in Room 208 of the Student Activities Center.

Parking will be available in the Esther Street lot.

The event is sponsored by Titan Productions, IU South Bend.
