League of Women Voters and IU South Bend to Host Public Forum on Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger
Local League obtains national grant to discuss U.S. incentives to end global poverty and build partnerships for international development.
South Bend – Foreign policy, poverty and hunger will be the focus of a conversation from 1 to 2:15 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in the Room 221-223, Student Activities Center, Indiana University South Bend. The event is free and open to the public.
Three IU South Bend professors will talk on the topic of "Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger: A Global Perspective." They will discuss the factors that lead to widespread poverty and hunger, and offer suggestions about what political leaders and ordinary citizens can do to reduce the number of people living in these conditions.
The professors scheduled to speak will be Douglas Agbetsiafa, professor of business and economics; De' Bryant, professor of psychology and George Candler, assistant professor of public and environmental affairs.
The League of Women Voters of the South Bend Area and the American Democracy Project of IU South Bend are the sponsors of the event. The local league is one of 12 leagues nationwide to receive a "Millennium Campaign" grant to host a series of community forums. The goal of the campaign is to bring thoughtful discussion and debate about foreign policy to hundreds of thousands of Americans and foreign citizens in their schools, churches, clubs, universities, homes, and civic organizations.
