New Program Offers Transition to Teaching

Indiana University South Bend School of Education is introducing a Transition to Teaching Program for Secondary Education (T2T). The T2T program is for individuals who have bachelor's degrees and are looking for a career change to become teachers. T2T is an 18 credit program.

The 2007-08 T2T cohort for secondary education begins on July 2 and the application deadline is April 15. Cohort size is limited and applications received after April 15 may delay acceptance until summer 2008. The secondary education program is completed in one summer session, and fall and spring semesters.

The T2T for secondary teaching is geared for people who have bachelor’s degrees in English, French, Spanish, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, social studies, history, geography, economics, political science, psychology or sociology.

The program requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution of higher learning with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the subject area you intend to teach; or a graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in the subject area you intend to teach; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and five years of professional experience in the subject.

To apply, IU South Bend requires an official transcript from each college/university attended. No transcript is required if an applicant attended any of the Indiana University campuses.

Applicants will submit two letters of recommendation, pass the Praxis I assessment test of basic academic skills, present results from a criminal history check and complete a self-assessment if their initial preparedness to be classroom teachers.

The Praxis Web site is http://www.ets.org/praxis/ . To schedule an appointment to take the Praxis I exam locally, see http://www.prometric.com/.
