Indiana University South Bend will have a Green Michiana Sustainability Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 12. The fair will be in the Administration Building Grille (cafeteria).
More than 30 businesses and organizations will participate and provide information about environmental issues and green alternatives for the home, garden and the road. Find out how to recycle, dispose of TVs, paint and more.
Throughout the day, more than 20 musicians will perform. For the children, there will be a bike rodeo to teach bike safety tips.
The event is free and open to the public. Fair participants should park in the Esther Street parking lot. Signs will direct people to the Grille.
The event will be a drop off point for Styrofoam packing peanuts, white expanded polystyrene No. 6 (often used for Styrofoam coolers and for electronic equipment packaging), plastic grocery bags, personal home computers and cell phones.
The plastic bags must be clean. No Styrofoam plates or cups will be accepted.
The computers will be collected by Free Geek Michiana. There will be a $15 charge for monitors, working or not. The working computers will be refurbished and used in the community. The non-working computers will be recycled. There is a two computer limit per household. No scanners or printers will be accepted.
The cell phones will be donated to a women's shelter.
Last year, BagFest, which was the first plastic bag recycling event in the area, collected more than 72,000 plastic bags. The bags were counted for a research project and recycled by Wal-Mart. The bags are used in various products such as lawn furniture.
This year the bags will be transported directly to a Wal-Mart truck.
