IU South Bend and the American Cancer Society have teamed up for the Breast Cancer Awareness Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 2.
The run/walk will begin with opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. followed by the race at 8:30 a.m. from the Student Activities Center. An Educational Expo will offer information on cancer prevention and early detection from 8 to 10:30 a.m. in the activities center.
Sheriden DeCastro-Dubas, community development director for the American Cancer Society, said the walk was held for years in Mishawaka. The new location came from a discussion with IU South Bend co-chair Jim Hurst. “It is a great partnership for us to be working with IU South Bend.”
Hurst said they are expecting nearly 500 runners/walkers. “Last year, Maureen Kennedy (event co-chair for the campus) and I co-chaired the wellness run for IUSB Fest in 2003. It was one of our targets this year to utilize the river and have another run. It was a success last year.”
Hurst added that Honeywell is the lead flagship sponsor to help the event to be even bigger.
The fees for the run/walk are $15 and $10 for children 12 and under. After Sept. 13, the fees are $20 and $15 for children. There is a $5 late fee for race day. Registration includes one long-sleeve T-shirt.
There will be prizes for participants raising donations of $100, $200 and $300. The top 10 fundraisers will also receive prizes.
