Indiana University South Bend Adjunct Assistant Professor of Chemistry Thomas Miranda has recently published a book, entitled Growing Up in Hawaii.
The memoir, published in September 2003 by 1st Books, explores Miranda’s childhood in Hawaii, his young adulthood (where he bore witness to the attack on Pearl Harbor), and his later journey to California. The stories and spiritual messages were written with a young audience in mind—Miranda’s own grandchildren, in fact—but the book is also a window into the experiences of a man who lived through the Great Depression and ultimately brought his family success.
Thomas Miranda was born on a sugar plantation, Ewa Hill, Oahu, and lived in Honolulu until moving to California. There he graduated from San Jose State College where he earned his teaching degree. He later acquired a Master of Science in Business Administration from IU South Bend and a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. Miranda has worked for both the O’Brien and Whirlpool corporations as director of research and staff scientist respectively, and was the editor of a scientific journal, the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology’s Journal of Coatings Technology.
1st Books was founded in 1997, and has worked with more than 13,000 authors for print-on-demand and eBook publications. For more information on 1stBooks, visit www.1stBooks.com.
