The education of immigrant children and the role of immigrant and international women in the United States will be the topics of two conferences in the upcoming weeks at Indiana University South Bend.
"Educating Immigrant Children" will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in Room 1001, Wiekamp Hall, IU South Bend. The speakers will be Assistant Professor Myung-sook Koh and Assistant Professor Kwadwo Okrah, both of the School of Education; Professor Gabrielle Robinson, of the International Programs; and Maria Robledo Pedraza from the South Bend Community School Corp.
Each speaker will give their personal perspective on an educational issue and offer two or three questions for group discussion. Groups will then report back to the full session following a break out session.
Campus Diversity director Charlotte Pfeifer said the program will permit IU South Bend education students to meet and talk with teachers from the area schools and alumni. "It is a very topical and these are important issues we should be concerned with," she said.
The event is sponsored by the Office of Campus Diversity, School of Education, Continuing Education, IU Credit Union and IU South Bend Alumni Affairs.
The second program of these programs on immigrant and international women will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27 in Room 1001, Wiekamp Hall.
The speakers, titles and the birth lands are: Linda Chen, associate professor of political science, China; Louise Collins, associate professor of philosophy, England; Assistant Professor Isabel O'Connor, assistant professor of history, Spain; and Professor Lynette Lashley, professor of communications, Trinidad.
The moderator will be Assistant Professor of Psychology Catherine Borshuk, who is from Canada.
The conference will follow the same procedure as the education conference with small groups and discussion time.
Both events are free and open to the public; however a head count is needed for refreshments. Please RSVP for the first event by Feb. 16, and for the women's conference by March 22. For information call (574) 237-6535.
