The Franklin D. Schurz Library and the campus American Democracy Project will host Chris Hedges, author of the university’s first One Book, One Campus title, “War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, in rooms 221-225 of the Student Activities Center.
Hedges will discuss his work and answer questions. A book signing and reception sponsored by The New York Times will follow.
This event is free and open to the public.
One Book, One Campus is a university and community-wide reading and discussion program that encourages all students, faculty, staff, and community members to read the same book and participate in discussions and events related to the work.
Hedges, a former war correspondent, writes of lessons learned in his 15 years of covering war zones, in among other places, El Salvador, Iraq, Sarajevo, and Kosovo. He is also the author of “What Every Person Should Know About War” and “The Decalogue.”
Hedges’ visit is the final event of this year’s program, which has included several book discussions on and off campus, a program by South Bend Tribune reporter Fred Dodd, and a table talk led by faculty and student veterans sharing their reactions to the book. After Hedges’ event, the library will begin preparing events for next year’s One Book title, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick, which was selected in a campus-wide vote.
