Love is in the air and Indiana University South Bend will remember St. Valentine’s Day in a special way with a dinner, silent auction and dance to benefit the Chad E. Pearson Memorial Scholarship. Pearson was an IU South Bend student who was studying in London when he was struck by a car and killed in 1994.
The scholarship was established in his honor and the first one was awarded in 1995.
The second annual event will be Friday, Feb. 11. The reception and cash bar will begin at 6 p.m. in the Main Café of the Administration Building. The silent auction is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m. The dance will be from 9 p.m. to midnight in the Main Café.
The dinner and auction are open to the public, if you are over the age of 21. However, because of alcohol policies on campus, IU South Bend students are not allowed to attend the dinner or auction. Tickets for the dinner and auction are $20 each. Dinner attendees may stay for the dance.
The general public and IU South Bend students are invited to the dance and tickets are $5 each.
During the reception, Chad’s mother, Glenda Pearson, will be autographing her book, “But Should the Angels Call for Him: A Mother’s Journey Through Grief and Discovery.”
In Chad’s honor, the community created the scholarship. His parents, Larry and Glenda Pearson, have worked with the scholarship committee to select community-minded honors students for the award. Ten scholarships have been awarded since 1995.
Through the support from his parents, friends, family, community members and business leaders, the endowment is now $44,000.
The Chad Pearson Scholarship Committee and IU South Bend Student Government now are working to increase the principal of the scholarship fund to $100,000. This will enable the committee to award one $5,000 scholarship per year.
“Our son, Chad, exemplified everything good about an IUSB student – compassionate, generous, studious, fun-loving and committed to improving the quality of life for everyone. This scholarship fund helps IUSB students achieve their dreams of a life of service to others. By building the scholarship fund to the $100,000 level, we will be able to make a significant difference in the lives of our future leaders,” according to Larry Pearson, Chad’s father.
For information about the dance or to make a donation to the Chad Pearson Scholarship, call Jan Halperin, Director of Development at IU South Bend, at (574) 520-4801.
The book is available at local bookstores. For information about the book, check the Web site www.angelscall.us.
