Philosophy Day 2005 at Indiana University South Bend will address Stoic philosophy and how it guides the actions of many in the military, on Thursday, Feb. 3.

The guest speaker is Nancy Sherman, university professor of philosophy at Georgetown University. She was the inaugural holder of the Distinguished Chair in Ethics at the United States Naval Academy.

Her books include "The Fabric of Character" and "Making a Necessity out of Virtue."

The day will open with a colloquium on “A Warrior’s Anger” from noon to 1:30 p.m., on the third floor bridge of Wiekamp Hall.

Contact Mary Jester at (574) 520-4491 by Monday, Jan. 31, if you would like a free box lunch at the colloquium.

A reception for Sherman will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the Wiekamp Bridge.

A public lecture on “Stoic Warriors” will be presented at 7 p.m. in Room 1001, Wiekamp Hall. Sherman will delve into the ancient legacy of soldiers and seamen being trained to “suck it up,” putting aside their feelings and getting on with the mission. She will explore what the Stoic philosophy actually is, the role it has played in the character of the military - both modern and ancient – and its value as a philosophy of life.

Sherman will draw on anecdotes from military history from ancient Greek wars to the modern-day Iraq War. Through these stories, she illuminates the military mind and uses it as a window on the virtues of the Stoic philosophy, which are far richer and more interesting than our popularized notion.

All three events are free and open to the public.

The events are presented by the IU South Bend Philosophy Department with the support of the Addison Locke Roache Memorial Lectureship Fund, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Departments of Political Science and Women’s Studies.
