IU SOUTH BEND WEBCAM OFFERS LOOK AT PROGRESS OF PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

With your computer and a quick click of a mouse you can view the historic construction of the pedestrian bridge at Indiana University South Bend.

IU South Bend has installed a Webcam on the third floor of the Franklin D. Schurz Library that provides a view of the construction that is updated every 30 seconds. The camera can be viewed by going to www.iusb.edu/bridgecam/ or following the prompts under the Popular Links category on the IU South Bend homepage at www.iusb.edu.

Construction began in December on the pedestrian bridge that will link the IU South Bend main campus to 26 acres on the south side of the St. Joseph River. Access to the property will allow further growth and development of the campus. Plans include recreational fields for growing intramural programs at IU South Bend, additional parking, walking and bicycle trails, and future student housing.

The $2.75 million project is funded by federal grants along with supplemental funds from Indiana University.

The Axis 206 network camera provides a wide-angle online view of the construction 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The images will be archived and also turned into a time-lapse video that will document the construction of the bridge.

The pedestrian bridge will be 600 feet long and 10 feet wide and is expected to take one year to complete. The bridge will be made using sections of metal and concrete, which will be connected over two pilings in the St. Joseph River. The sides of the bridge will be approximately four feet high and will contain electrical connections for lights, telephones and signage.

The construction is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The corps also will be working to stem riverbank erosion on both sides of the St. Joseph River at the bridge.
