Scholarships Established by Schurz

Franklin D. Schurz Jr. recently donated $240,000 to establish and support scholarships for African-American and Hispanic students at Indiana University South Bend.

The students must meet the requirement of a 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need. The amounts and recipients will be determined by a scholarship committee.

Schurz is the president and director of Schurz Communications, Inc., the parent company of the South Bend Tribune and WSBT Inc. Other SCI companies include The Hoosier Times, Inc., which publishes three daily papers in Indiana _ Bloomington, Bedford and Martinsville. Other holdings include three additional newspapers, shoppers, four radio stations, two cable companies, and a publishing company.

Schurz received his bachelor’s and master’s in business administration from Harvard University. He has spent most of his career with the South Bend Tribune and Schurz Communications. He has been a long time advocate for IU South Bend and he is a member of the IU South Bend Advisory Board.
